Job Description

About Turing

Based in Palo Alto, California, Turing is one of the world's fastest-growing AI companies accelerating the advancement and deployment of powerful AI systems. Turing helps customers in two ways: working with the world’s leading AI labs to advance frontier model capabilities in thinking, reasoning, coding, agentic behavior, multimodality, multilingualism, STEM and frontier knowledge; and leveraging that expertise to build real-world AI systems that solve mission-critical priorities for Fortune 500 companies and government institutions. Turing has received numerous awards, including Forbes's "One of America's Best Startup Employers," #1 on The Information's annual list of "Most Promising B2B Companies," and Fast Company's annual list of the "World's Most Innovative Companies." Turing's leadership team includes AI technologists from industry giants Meta, Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Twitter, McKinsey, Bain, Stanford, Caltech, and MIT. About the Role

We’re looking for a hands-on, technically strong Engineering Lead to join our AI Prototyping team (UltraLab). This is a high-impact leadership role where you’ll guide a talented team of engineers to build fast, flexible AI-driven prototypes that help solve real-world business problems across industries.

UltraLab’s mission is to turn ambiguous business challenges into working AI prototypes — rapidly. As Engineering Lead, you’ll help us build that bridge from idea to execution. You’ll be responsible for technical architecture, engineering best practices, and delivery — while fostering a strong engineering culture that blends craft, speed, and innovation.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in an R&D environment, has a strong product mindset, and is excited about what AI/GenAI can unlock in real-world applications. You’ll stay close to code and architecture, while also shaping process, culture, and cross-functional alignment across product, design, and clients.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead technical design reviews and ensure high-quality, scalable architecture across rapid prototypes and full-stack AI applications.

- Define and uphold engineering standards for code quality, observability, testing, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud infrastructure.

- Stay up to date with AI/GenAI tooling and frameworks; guide integration into prototypes where valuable.

- Translate product ideas and customer problems into robust technical strategies; evaluate tradeoffs between build-vs-buy or short-term-vs-scalable paths.

- Collaborate with Product Managers and Designers to shape requirements and ensure technical feasibility during the discovery and prototyping phase.

- Support fast-turnaround builds while planning for long-term maintainability and platform reusability.

- Drive availability, reliability, and operational excellence standards even in quick-moving prototype contexts.

- Mentor and grow a team of engineers, helping them build technical depth and ownership; foster a culture of experimentation, learning, and autonomy.

- Contribute to the evolution of Ultralab’s internal engineering systems, from reusable components to DevOps playbooks and observability frameworks.

- Facilitate cross-functional alignment with other engineering teams, product, design, and client-facing groups.

What We're Looking For
- 7+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ in a tech lead or engineering management capacity.

- Help accelerate team velocity by driving focus, reducing blockers, and enabling rapid iteration on high-relevance prototypes tailored to customer needs.

- Solid grounding in software engineering fundamentals — including clean code, collaborative review, and lightweight CI/CD — with the judgment to balance speed and structure in a prototyping environment.

- A track record of leading fast-moving engineering teams and delivering working products in ambiguous, early-stage environments–and the ability to thrive in that ambiguity, and solve strategic and technical problems.

- Passion for AI/ML and practical experience integrating AI technologies into real products or internal tools.

- Excellent communication skills; able to bridge technical and non-technical teams, and guide alignment between product goals and engineering direction.

- Builder mentality: you enjoy solving problems through working software, and know when to move fast and when to stabilize.

- Experience with DevOps and platform engineering practices is a plus.

Bonus Points
- Experience in client-facing or consulting environments.

Why Join Us

The AI space is evolving fast — and you’ll be building right at the edge. This is a rare opportunity to lead a team shaping intelligent, responsive software that blends real-world needs with cutting-edge AI. Your impact will be tangible: solving real business problems, mentoring great engineers, and influencing how we build technology at scale.

You won’t just keep up with the future — you’ll help build it.

Advantages of joining Turing:
- Amazing work culture (Super collaborative & supportive work environment; 5 days a week)
- Awesome colleagues (Surround yourself with top talent from Meta, Google, LinkedIn etc. as well as people with deep startup experience)
- Competitive compensation
- Flexible working hours
- Full-time remote opportunity
